UN Ends Restrictions on Syria's Leader Ahead of White House Visit
Security Council representatives gave the green light to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his presidential meeting the coming week.
He became interim leader subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that removed the former president in winter 2024, concluding thirteen long years of internal conflict.
The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations said the UN had sent "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" since Assad was deposed.
Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions as the leader of the religious organization HTS, once connected to al-Qaeda. America delisted the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups in July.
Additional Sanctions Relief
The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official Minister Anas Khattab.
The nation's top diplomat expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the sanctions, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude to Washington and allied countries for assisting the country and its population."
Imminent Washington Talks
President Sharaa's presidential meeting on Monday occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The pair met on their first occasion during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip on a tour of the region.
After that meeting, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" possessing a "powerful background".
His Islamist group HTS operated as the terrorist network's partner in Syria prior to breaking relations back in 2016.
Earlier American Trip
The upcoming meeting is not Sharaa's first trip to America during this period. During September, he became the initial Syrian president to speak before the United Nations gathering in New York in almost 60 years.
In his speech, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position among the nations of the world" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
